Sweet Kolukattai / Rice Dumplings

Kolukattai is a festive South Indian sweet, steamed dumplings made from rice flour dough, filled with coconut and jaggery.

Ingridents

  • 1 cup raw rice flour
  • 1/4 cup coconut flakes
  • 1/4 cup jaggery
  • 1/4 tsp dry ginger powder
  • 1/4 tsp cardamaom powder
  • 1 tbsp spoon ghee
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp Roasted Split Gram powder
  • salt

Methods

  1. Preparation of sweet stuff filling – In a dry pan put coconut flakes and  jaggery and heat the pan in low flame. This needs to be done until the jaggery melts and mix well with coconut flakes, slowly stir it.
  2. Then add dry ginger powder, cardamaom powder, roasted split gram powder and ghee to the sweet stuff, then stir it for a minute. Take the coconut pooranam in a bowl and allow it to cool off. Then make gooseberry size balls out of the pooranam and keep it in a plate.
  3. Preparation of outer cover – In a pan roast the rice flour in low flame, then add pinch of salt and pour hot water little by little. Stir the mixture until it becomes a chapati dough. Now pour 1 spoon coconut oil over it. Dough should be smooth and non-sticky. Now kozhukattai dough is ready.
  4. Grease your palm with little oil and then take little kozhukattai dough ball and press it in middle to make it like a patti. In the middle of the kozhukattai patti, add coconut pooranam ball.
  5. Close the sides of kozhukattai dough gently in all the sides. Now the coconut pooranam is sealed completely by the dough. Remove the excess dough from the tip. Repeat the steps and fill the rest of the dough.
  6. Grease the idli plates with oil and then place the kozhukattai in the idly plates. Now bake the kozhukattai in cooker for 5 to 7 mins. Remove the cooked kozhukattai from cooker and allow it to cool off and then gently take it out.
  7. The yummy coconut poorana kozhukattai is ready to serve and for neivedhyam.
